As my brief for this week I was challenged with composing a song with the inspiration from a TV show. So I thought about recent TV shows I had been watching and picked “Youth with You”, produced by iQIYI. The first task after picking a TV show of which I find inspirational is to get key points on why it is inspirational so I can use it to pick a style and compose lyrics. To do this I created a mind map on the show and put down important factors of the show such as why it is inspirational to me and why I think it’s inspirational to other people as well. I also jotted down what I think the people in the TV show would be feeling.
“Youth with You” Season 2 is a TV show which brings a lot of idol trainees who are in training to debut. It helps these individuals realise their dreams while improving their skills as an idol. The top 9 idols, out of roughly 100 contestants, who are picked by the viewers debut into a group. The viewers get to pick what type of group it will be because they will vote for the idols they wish to be in the group. There are multiple rounds with elimination rounds. The trainees go through many challenges such as showing their individuality and not disappearing behind other members. Their speed to learn dance routines and songs while not losing their identity. They also have to show their versatility by exploring multiple genres rather than sticking to their strong point. Some of trainees are challenged with backlash and their personal identity being accepted as many people already have their ideal, what they consider normal, concept which is usually a cute/lovely concept for girls however even with this there are multiple trainees challenging this and bringing out their own style. With this in mind I created some lyrics that I believe links to what the show is about.
The first verse I mention how they have sleepless nights which is because they are busy rehearsing and practising their skills until late at night to the point where they only have about 2 to 4 hours sleep a night depending on how much time they have to prepare a performance. The questions link to the self doubt that the people hold because they have trouble believing they are good enough. However in the program it shows that all the contestants give each other support and that they are all in similar positions so they can relate to one another.
The chorus explains how they work hard to show positivity to everyone because it is there job to make people happy and they constantly have people idolise them so if they are able to stabilize showing their positivity they can be helpful to many people. The last line of the chorus mentioning their quirks is a reference to their individual identity which helps them gain fans and continue to give them support throughout their Idol journey as people will be able to connect.
The second verse focuses on the fact that they are constantly busy rehearsing and improving their skills so they don’t have that much time for themselves showing their sacrifice as they work extremely hard in hopes of being someone's idol. And even though they don’t spend a lot of time with their friends due to this they still hope they have the support of their friends and family because it helps give them motivation.
The bridge refers to Idols which have already debuted and made an impact on people, including these trainees. This hives the trainees motivation and inspiration as they themselves build up to also be able to be impactful to other people. Idols Generally have a good reputation as people look up to them which is why I described them as diamonds because they are super precious to people.
Overall the song is in a major key to try and portray the happiness that the trainees want to give to other people. The intro and the outro is the same thing however on the outro it is played at a faster pace as it represents the idols having grown in their journey.
I hope you all enjoy the piece and can see the inspiration from the show and can even connect to the song yourselves.
